Robert Coles, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician with a special interest in newborn care and pediatric dermatology. Suramin is a 100-year-old drug developed to treat African sleeping sickness. It is not approved for any therapeutic use in the U.S. However, a small clinical trial at UC San Diego School of Medicine found that a single intravenous dose of suramin produced measurable, but transient, improvements in five boys with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). More broadly, the trial findings support the “cell danger response theory,” which posits that autism is driven by metabolic dysfunction — and thus treatable. Larger, longer clinical trials are needed to assess suramin as an ASD treatment. He also discusses the need for safely conducted research through a team approach. Dr. Ciacci is the clinic’s trial expert for neurosurgical technique and the principal investigator for the clinical trial on spinal cord injury. He has extensive experience in neuro-oncology and is a professor in the Department of Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Anna Van Niekerk, DO, is a board-certified family medicine doctor dedicated to practicing the full breadth of primary care and caring for patients of all ages, including children, adults, and seniors. She provides preventative care, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic conditions. Dr. Van Niekerk also sees patients for dermatological concerns and women's health.

Her practice includes low-risk prenatal care for pregnant women until the end of their third trimester at which time they will be transferred to obstetrics care for delivery. Her special interests include integrative medicine, osteopathic manipulative medicine and global health. Shea McNanie was born premature and weighed less than two pounds. She spent three months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at UC San Diego Medical Center. Her parents refer to her as a miracle. Twenty-five years later, Shea is thriving and now volunteers as a “cuddler” in the NICU at Jacobs Medical Center. Shea describes holding and comforting the hospital’s tiniest patients as the best thing she has ever done.
